Artist Research - Sally Hewitt
Sally Hewitt
Sally Hewitt is a British textiles artist from Kent. Sally describes her work as: “My practice centres on bodies, ideas of beauty and ugliness and the conventions that determine which is seen as which. My medium is mainly stitching and embroidery. I like the discordance between the medium and the content". I admire her technique and how she uses nylon jersey, silver spandex, padding, slashing and she uses a quilting hoop to display her piece. Her work often shocks it's audience as she comments of body insecurities and women who have gone through body modification such as; mastectomies, breast enlargement and reduction and acid attacks. I think that her work is innovative as it comments on subjects that aren't largely discussed and she has inspired me to experiment with textiles and her way of working. I will be attending life drawing classes and this will give me the opportunity to accurately draw a nude woman from observation and practise my drawing skills.
